HOME WITH DIGNITY

Every contribution will help us build a community

FUNDRASING

By raising as much money as possible, we aim to provide not just shelter, but a home where these women and men can live with dignity, security, and peace of mind.

We believe that we can achieve this in the following ways:

  • Acquire land and/or property to ensure that the most older vulnerable women and men can stay within their support networks, avoiding the need to relocate to more affordable areas far from their communities.
  • Buy, build, renovate and refurbish to create suitable housing that allows for aging in place thereby preventing the need for early entry into the aged care system
  • Head leasing properties in partnerships on behalf of older women. This guarantees affordable housing for life, allowing these vulnerable older women and men to age peacefully in the one place.

All fundraising activity is conducted for the purposes of funding services for HOMELESS PEOPLE OR PEOPLE IN DANGER OF BECOMING HOMELESS in Australia pursuant to State/Territory regulations.

HIDDEN HOMELESSNESS

“Women over 55 represent our fastest growing cohort of homeless people. They often go unnoticed as they find refuge in cars and friends’ lounges, quietly experience homelessness for longer periods of time, and struggle with lower incomes, health issues, limited access to affordable housing, gender-based discrimination and lack of support.

The reasons behind hidden homelessness especially amongst older women are diverse and encompass economic instability, domestic violence, and family breakdowns as leading factors. Women in these situations often fear the stigma associated with visible homelessness, which can lead to a reluctance to seek help or resources, causing them to go silent.

Men over 55  are more likely to be living in improvised dwellings, tents or sleeping out than women: 12 per cent compared to 8 per cent. However, most males 55 and over who are experiencing homelessness are living in boarding houses.  There can also be various factors that may have led to their situation such as the breakdown of a marriage, job loss, death of a partner or development of an illness.

The housing stress or an inability to obtain housing often places someone at risk of homelessness in unsuitable living arrangements and can cause physical health problems or mental health problems — including anxiety, depression and loneliness — and this makes finding and maintaining safe and suitable housing very challenging for the person.
